Today, we’re favoring the air conditioner and covering how you can perform DIY maintenance on yours. Your air conditioner works hard to maintain your family’s comfort, especially during hot spells—so why not return the favor and maintain your system? Maintenance keeps your A/C operating efficiently, extends its life span, and can even save you on energy bills. Here are some ways you can perform A/C maintenance at home (but always remember to turn your system off first before starting):
- Change your filter monthly during the summer when you’re running your A/C. Filters collect dirt, dust, and other contaminants which then slow airflow and can negatively affect your energy bills. If you’re not sure what filter you need, we can help you find the right one. Clean filters will keep your A/C operating more efficiently and for longer.
- Clean the fins and condenser coils using your garden hose to wash away any dirt or debris that has built up. A thorough rinse will improve airflow and increase the efficiency of your system. If your system is particularly dirty, you might consider using a fin cleaning spray. However, NEVER use a pressure washer to clean your fins as it can cause damage. If you notice any fins are bent, straighten them with a fin comb.
- Trim back shrubbery and remove debris around your unit to create a clear space of at least two feet. Your system needs airflow to operate efficiently so it’s important to keep bushes and plants trimmed and your fins clear of debris.
